The site was under fire for allegedly allowing illegal prostitution to flourish and came under particular scrutiny after the murder of Julissa Brisman, a 26 year old masseuse who was allegedly killed by Phillip Markoff, 22, who had met her through an advert she had posted on Craigslist. However, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster has publicly railed against what he sees as unfair discrimination against his company. In his blog , Buckmaster cites numerous explicit adverts for escorts and sensual massage at backpage. Could the blessing of politicos on voluminous pornographic sex-for-money ads in journalistic media have anything to do with the need for positive coverage and campaign endorsements from said media? Buckmaster is fully aware of the challenges of user generated content. They go on to highlight the problems facing any site containing user-generated content; those of filtering and scrutinizing ads and suggested that Buckmaster would be better off fighting the political pressure and improving Craigslist content-filtering process than attacking his competitors.
