I hate to admit it, but…before I used it I didn’t believe it would work.
I’ve never been much of a bath taker – I prefer showers. I never felt the tub, any tub, was clean enough to sit for a long period of time. I’d sit there and over think how “clean” the tub actually was and that to me is not relaxing…at all. I would scrub the tub with this chemical and that chemical thinking that maybe this time I could sit there and relax and know the tub was clean. But then I would sit there thinking how I was sitting in a bath tub filled with water and the chemicals that were just used to “clean” it. But, no big deal I could always just shower touching minimal chemical covered tile.
Sorry for just ruining the relaxing bath you were just planning on taking.
Then came time to give my son a bath. My brand new baby, with soft, sensitive skin. The ideas of the chemicals really skeeved me out now. So began my research on chemical free cleaners.
This mixture worked amazingly on my already gross, apartment tub. It has never been so noticeably clean in the four years we have lived here. Plus it cost me as much for the ingredients to make this as it would a bottle of chemicals and I have enough left to make it many more times! So not only does it work, it’s cost effective!
This is what you need:
1 Cup White Vinegar
1 Cup Original Blue Dawn Dish Soap
8 Tablespoons Baking Soda
Empty Spray Bottle
*You could cut this in half if you have a smaller tub, but I found this amount to cover everything well.
First, heat the vinegar in the microwave for about 90 seconds and let cool for a couple minutes and then add the baking soda. If you don’t, you will have a volcano on your hands, not to mention a huge mess. (Trust me, I know from experience)
Even after I let it cool for some time, I SLOWLY added the baking soda because it was still fizzing.
Then add the dawn dish soap and give it a good stir.
You can pour it into a spray bottle if you have one handy, it does make it a bit easier to apply.
I then sprayed my whole tub and let it sit for about two-three hours. (I actually forgot it was there because there wasn’t a chemical stink coming from my bathroom intoxicating my whole house, whoops!) Nevertheless, I rinsed it off and literally watched the grim rinse down the drain. My tub was shiny and CLEAN! I’d say it was like brand new, but I am pretty sure that tub is older than me 😉 so we will go with cleaner than it’s been in years!
If the lighting in my bathroom wasn’t so horrible, I’d show you how clean it actually is, but unfortunately, no picture would do it justice.
Give it a try and let me know your turn out, I’d love to hear how it’s worked for you!
Now, excuse me while I go and take a bath!
